Hey friends! 💬
Have you ever sat in traffic and wondered, "Am I spending too much just to get to work?"
I've been there. So today, I'm breaking down the true cost of commuting—based on my own experience with driving, biking, and taking the metro.
Let's talk real numbers, small details, and the stuff we usually ignore when choosing how to get around 🚗🚴♀️🚇
So yeah, driving seems easy, right? No waiting, private space, AC on full blast. But let's look at what I actually pay:
• Fuel: Around $90–$150/month (depends on distance and car type)
• Parking: $50–$120/month (city parking is wild 😩)
• Insurance: Around $80/month (this varies a lot)
• Maintenance & Repairs: Roughly $30/month (averaged over time)
Total per month: Easily $250–$380, and that's if nothing breaks.
Also, traffic = time = stress. That alone makes me think twice sometimes.
Now, I started biking on short commutes last year. Here's the breakdown:
• Bike cost: $300 (paid once, lasted years!)
• Maintenance: Maybe $5–$10/month for tires and chain oil
• Gear: Helmet + lights = around $50 (one-time)
Monthly average: Around $10 max after buying everything.
And bonus? I get daily exercise, skip traffic, and feel mentally fresh.
Downside? Rainy days or super hot afternoons = 🥵
Metro is my go-to when the weather's bad or the distance is longer. Costs:
• Monthly pass: Around $60–$100 depending on the city
• No fuel, no parking, no stress
• You can read or scroll TikTok while riding 😎
Total monthly: $60–$100
It's super consistent and predictable. And usually faster than driving during peak hours.
If we just look at money, biking wins 🥇 hands down. Metro is the second best if you want comfort and don't mind a short walk. Driving? It's the most expensive by far—and let's not even start on traffic jams or repair surprises.
Here's how I see it:
🚗 Driving = comfort + privacy, but super pricey.
🚴♀️ Biking = healthy + cheap, but weather-dependent.
🚇 Metro = affordable + stress-free, but less flexible.
Pick what works for your time, budget, and mood. I actually rotate between all three depending on the day!
