Disney’s 2019 live-action Aladdin brings the classic tale of a kind-hearted young man, a brave princess, and a wish-granting Genie back to the big screen.

Directed by Guy Ritchie, it stars Mena Massoud as Aladdin, Naomi Scott as Jasmine, and Will Smith as the Genie. Here is how the story unfolds, from the streets of Agrabah to the palace.

Life in Agrabah

In the bustling streets of Agrabah, Aladdin lives with his mischievous monkey friend, Abu. Life is ordinary until a twist of fate brings him face-to-face with Princess Jasmine, who has disguised herself as a commoner to explore the city outside the palace.

At the same time, the cunning royal advisor Jafar is plotting to overthrow Jasmine’s father and seize the throne. He wants a magical lamp hidden in the Cave of Wonders, which only someone deemed the “diamond in the rough” can enter. Naturally, he needs Aladdin to retrieve it.

The Cave of Wonders and the Genie

Aladdin bravely enters the Cave of Wonders, full of treasures, a magic carpet and, most importantly, the legendary lamp. But trouble arises when Abu picks up a ruby and the cave starts to collapse. Jafar grabs the lamp and leaves Aladdin trapped inside.

Luckily, Abu has snatched the lamp back. By rubbing it, Aladdin summons a powerful Genie who grants him three wishes. With a clever trick, Aladdin gets the Genie to free them from the cave without using a wish, so all three are still his to use wisely.

Becoming Prince Ali

Back in Agrabah, Aladdin uses his first wish to become Prince Ali of Ababwa, hoping to win Jasmine’s heart. He parades through the streets, singing, dancing, and showering the crowd with gold, while Abu joins the show as an elephant.

But Jasmine isn’t easily impressed. Aladdin’s nerves get the better of him, and his awkward words at their first meeting almost ruin the moment. Later, the Genie helps him dance with her at a palace celebration, but the spotlight falls only on him, leaving Jasmine feeling distant.

A Magic Carpet Ride

Determined to make things right, Aladdin visits Jasmine to apologize and invites her on the magic carpet. He shows her the world beyond the palace walls, a world she has always dreamed of exploring. When she suspects his true identity, he convinces her he is a real prince who disguised himself to understand his people.

However, Jafar discovers the truth and throws Aladdin into the sea, and the Genie uses the second wish to save him. Aladdin and Jasmine then expose Jafar’s plan to the Sultan, breaking his magic staff and having him locked in the palace dungeon.

Still, Aladdin hesitates to tell Jasmine the truth about his first wish, fearing he might lose her, and this strains his bond with the Genie.

Jafar’s Takeover

Meanwhile, Jafar’s parrot, Iago, frees him from the dungeon, and Jafar steals the lamp. With the Genie under his control, he wishes to become Sultan and then the most powerful sorcerer. He reveals Aladdin’s true background to Jasmine and banishes Aladdin and Abu to a frozen wasteland.

Threatening Jasmine’s father and her friend Dalia, Jafar demands her hand in marriage. But Aladdin and Abu return on the magic carpet, reclaim the lamp, and confront him during the wedding ceremony.

The Final Wish

Aladdin cleverly tricks Jafar into wishing to become the most powerful being in the universe. Since the Genie is more powerful still, Jafar turns into a genie himself, trapped in a lamp along with Iago. True to his promise, Aladdin uses his final wish to free the Genie, letting him live as a human.

The Sultan makes Jasmine Agrabah’s new ruler, free to change its outdated laws. The Genie marries Dalia and starts a family, and Aladdin and Jasmine marry, beginning a new life together.

The 2019 Aladdin continues to captivate audiences with its mix of thrilling adventure and heartfelt moments. It is a story about courage, honesty, and staying true to yourself, and it reminds us that magic isn’t just about wishes, but about the choices we make and the love we share.
